Mini deep-fried crispy golden wontons are filled with fresh spiced apple pie filling and served with a side of caramel dipping sauce! A fun and delicious treat that's perfect any time of year!
In a large skillet, over medium-high heat, melt the butter. Add the prepared diced apples. Sauté until fork tender. About 3–4 minutes. Add brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Continue stirring over medium-high heat until it is bubbly and the brown sugar sauce thickens slightly. Remove from heat and cool slightly.
Place Wonton skins on a flat work surface. Dip your finger or pastry brush in water, outline the inside edge of each skin. Place ½-1 tablespoon of apple mixture in the center of each Wonton wrapper. Bring opposite corners together and pinch at the top. Using your fingers, pinch down the seam of each Wonton wrapper on all four sides until they stick together. Place each Wonton on a baking sheet. Continue until all wontons are made.
In a small bowl, combine ¼ cup of sugar and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon together. Stir to combine. Set aside.
In a heavy bottom sauce pan, place one inch of vegetable oil. Heat to 375°(F) degrees. Carefully place 2–3 wontons in the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 2–3 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, remove each fried apple Wonton and place on a paper towel-lined plate. Cool slightly and roll in cinnamon sugar.
Place on a serving tray or store in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Serve with caramel sauce for dipping.
Notes
Note you can substitute fresh apple filling with canned apple pie filling. Process apple filling in food processor until apples are bite size.
