Fried Wonton Apple Pie Bites with apples and cinnamon sticks. Ready to eat.

Apple season is upon us…finally! (Que the theme song to Gilmore girls! Sweater weather is right around the corner with cool autumn breezes and morning frost! I’m over the heat friends, bring on all things Autumn!)

Even if apple season wasn’t bearing down on us, you can make this delicious mini apple pie recipe anytime of the year by substituting canned apple pie filling. For that matter, you can use any type of canned pie filling. You’re not restricted to just apple, so get creative and go wild!

But, I digress…

If you’re an apple purest, like I am, and have an apple orchard…okay it’s two apple trees… that mass produce, you can whip up a stove-top version of fresh apple pie filling for these scrumptious cinnamon-sugar laced fried Wonton apple bites. Either way, fresh pie filling, or canned, you are going to love these heavenly little bites of apple pie!

  • 24 Wonton wrappers – (14 ounce package)
  • ¼ cup butter
  • 1½ cups apples, peeled and diced
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
  • Pinch of salt
  • ¼ cup sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon for cinnamon sugar
  • Water for Wontons’
Ingredients for apple pie wontons

In a large skillet over medium high heat, melt the butter. Add the diced apples and sauté for 2–3 minutes until fork tender. Slightly crispy, but tender enough, a fork will easily poke into them.

You are lightly “frying” the apples, and they are soaking up all that buttery goodness!

Add brown sugar, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Continue to cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture begins to bubble and slightly thickens. The brown sugar and butter create a wonderful rich caramel sauce for the apple pie filling.

Pro-tip: This filling is GREAT, served warm over vanilla bean ice cream…if you’re looking for an alternative dessert idea!

Remove from heat and let cool slightly. The mixture will continue to thicken as it cools.

I recommend having a small bowl of water on hand to “seal” the Wonton wrappers after they have been filled with the cooled apple pie filling.

Place wrappers on a flat work surface. Using a pastry brush, or the tip of your finger, outline each Wonton wrapper inner edge with a thin line of water. This helps the wrapper stick together.

Place ½ to 1 heaping tablespoon of apple pie filling in the center of each wrapper. If using canned apple pie filling, I recommend using a knife to cut the apples into smaller pieces, or placing your filling in a food processor for a quick spin! The apple pieces need to be bite size for this dessert.

TIP: You may have to adjust the amount of filling depending on if you are using fresh or canned, how big the apples are, etc.

Seal the wontons by bringing the corners across from each other together and pinching the top. Bring the other side corners together and pinch them together with the existing corners.

Using your fingers, press down each “seam”, starting from the top down to the bottom. Don’t worry if some of the filling seeps out. This can be a little messy. We like messy desserts! It just means they are superb!

Be sure all four sides have been sealed before frying.

Once all the seams have been “sealed”, by pressing them together, set aside on a baking sheet until you have all the apple pie bites ready to fry.

In a large, heavy, stock pot, or deep heavy sauce pan, place about 1-inch of vegetable oil. Heat to 375° over medium-high heat. There should be ripples in the oil on the bottom of the pan.

Carefully place a few apple pie Wonton into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown on all sides.

Using a slotted spoon, or long handled spider strainer, remove the cooked wontons and place them on a paper towel-lined plate. Cool slightly before rolling them in cinnamon sugar.

Place coated apple pie bites on a serving plate. Look at those beautiful little bundles of happiness all lined-up and ready to eat! But wait!!!

There’s a way to make this fun little dessert even better. (I know, mind-blowing!)

You’re saying “How can I make this even better?”. Well, let me tell you… you serve them with a cup of your favorite store-bought caramel sauce. I recommend a salted caramel sauce!

Now we can welcome our mouths to Autumn properly! One bite at a time…and then maybe again…and one more time, just to be sure our taste buds got the memo! Lol Yummy goodness friends!
